Countering Opposition to Abortion

Opposition to abortion based on ethical, moral, or religious beliefs poses a significant challenge to reproductive rights in India. Many groups and individuals argue that abortion is morally unacceptable or contradicts religious doctrines, advocating for stricter restrictions or outright bans. This opposition threatens to undermine the legal frameworks that currently permit conditional access to safe abortions, such as the MTP Act. If such moral and religious objections gain momentum, they could lead to the erosion of legal protections, making it more difficult for pregnant women to access safe and lawful abortion services. This societal resistance risks pushing women towards unsafe procedures or forcing them to carry pregnancies against their will, thereby compromising their health, autonomy, and rights. It underscores the need for ongoing advocacy to protect reproductive rights amid diverse cultural and religious perspectives.

Priority actions identified by ARISE to address opposition

  • Clearly define "opposition" as a foundational step. This includes:
    • Identifying key actors, types and levels of resistance
    • Understanding motivations, barriers, and influence
    • Deciding strategic approaches to engage, address or refrain where necessary
  • Continue with intelligence gathering and monitoring of the opposition activities and movements.
  • Move away from reactive responses to proactive narrative-building, positioning abortion within broader frameworks of public health, rights, and social justice.
  • Develop clear, consistent, and audience-specific advocacy narratives, supported by toolkits and guidelines
